Zoids, the legendary Japanese anime series that first aired in 1999, brings back memories for Thais who grew up in the golden age of mecha and mechanical beast anime. The adventure on planet Zi is filled with cool mechanical animals and a long-standing war between two empires. This series is not just about robot battles; it's also about friendship, self-discovery, and secrets hidden behind ancient technology.

Story Summary (No Spoilers)

Zoids tells the story on the distant planet Zi, where mechanical creatures called 'Zoids' are used as weapons in war between the Helic Republic and the Guylos Empire. After a prolonged war, a temporary ceasefire is established, but tensions remain, and the return of ancient Zoidian technology risks igniting a new war.

The story begins when Van Flyheight, a boy who dreams of becoming the greatest Zoid pilot, meets Fiona, a mysterious young woman with amnesia, and Zeke, an Organoid creature that can enhance Zoids' combat abilities. They travel with Moonbay, a sharp businesswoman, and Irvine, a taciturn mercenary, to find clues about Fiona's past. This journey takes them through various territories of the Republic and leads to the heart of a new conflict that will change the fate of planet Zi.

Performance and Characters

Although it's an anime series, the voice acting by Japanese actors is excellent. Daisuke Kishio as Van conveys the determination and innocence of a teenager naturally. Makiko Ohmoto voices Fiona, both gentle and mysterious, while Mitsuki Saiga as Raven, Van's enemy, feels cold and imposing.

Every character has clear development. Van grows from an ambitious boy into a responsible warrior. His group of friends each have their own backgrounds and motivations, making their journey engaging. Even the antagonist Gunther Prozen, though seemingly an extreme villain, has reasons and complexity that prevent viewers from hating him entirely.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

The series uses 2D animation mixed with 3D Zoids models, which was impressive for 1999. Each Zoid design is unique and consistent with real animals, making battles realistic and exciting. Action scenes are well-choreographed with fast editing that doesn't confuse.

The music composed by Seikou Nagaoka and Eishi Segawa perfectly enhances the story's emotions. The opening song 'Wild Flowers' and ending song 'You're the One' have become classics that fans still remember.

Editorial Analysis

Zoids is not just a children's series focused on selling toys; it has a fairly intense and complex story. Issues of war, use of technology for destruction, and the search for peace are presented through the perspective of child characters, making them accessible yet thought-provoking.

What's interesting is the relationship between humans and Zoids, which feels like a partnership rather than just weapons. Zeke as an Organoid symbolizes power that can be used for good or evil, depending on the wielder. Although the series has some slow parts, overall it's a fun and emotional adventure.

Verdict

Zoids is a series suitable for both children and adults who enjoy mecha adventure anime. It has a compelling story, lovable characters, and exciting action. Although the visuals may be a bit dated, it remains classic and timelessly fun. Recommended, especially if you are a die-hard fan of 90s cartoons.
